CINDERELLA, our poor waife that could not grow a coat and was so shy - is a real Cinderella story! Now known as Ella, she is learning to love her own private beach, when the Canadian Goose is not on patrol! She is slowly making friends with a gentle Irish Wolfhound and generally learning more social skills. House manners she has - even knows enough to stay out of the kitchen!!! This is another of our many heart-warming stories, dream come true, for which we give our heartiest thanks to her human family for seeing Ella's potential and taking the time to care for her and bring out her best. God Bless you, Elizabeth and Rene!

Hi Jane!
I figured I'd send you an email to let you know how Roscoe is doing. So far he has been a dream come true. He gets compliments on how well behaved and how good of a dog he is! The family loves him so much and he loves us all! He fits our family perfect. My father would bring him to my baseball games and he just brought him to my sister's soccer game this weekend, and he loves to sit with my father and enjoy the games. I was able to invite two friends over who own dogs and they played in my backyard like they've known each other forever. Roscoe is a saint with other dogs and with other people.
I hope all is well and you like the pictures! I couldn't have asked for a better dog, and I love him. I can't thank you enough! |

Aspen and Pam
|
It has been 9 years since we adopted our sweet boy, beautiful "Aspen" into our home. He is now 10 years young. It was Jane and Ron who coined him "sweet boy" they were right on. He is still as energetic as when we first brought him home.
These are stories about Aspen that I would like to share with you. One especially comes to mind.
Early one Fall morning around 5:30 A.M. we let Aspen out the back door to do his business, as usual, him barking either at a deer or the horses across the field. This morning he was quite vocal. My husband went to let him back in the house and he ran into me. I was sitting on the couch with my morning coffee. It was dark but I noticed something all round his muzzle. As he approached me Aspen was whining I could see there were porcupine quills inbedded in his muzzle and in his mouth. My husband and I took him into the kitchen calmed him down (and us) as much as we could, laid him down. My husband got the pliers and I held Aspen to comfort him, he was shaking like a leaf. As each quill was extracted from his muzzle he lay there and trusted us. Aspen endured the pain we knew he was suffering to extract each quill, there must have been at least 50 if not more. He never attempted to get up, bite, growl or become aggressive he knew we were taking care of him. As Blaine pulled each quill it took about 30 mins. we then realized Aspen had 2 left inside him mouth. We were both beside ourselves as to what to do, OMG. We decided we would give him a break from the torture and waited about 30 mins. until once again he laid down for us. His mouth opened allowing my husband to go inside to finish extracting the last 2 quills. It was amazing!!! I talked to other dog owners who had experienced this same event with their dogs, I found that Aspen had done an incredible feat to allow us to work on him. The Vet told us most large dogs have to be under anesthesia to pry the quills from a dog and their mouth. What a good dog and intelligent.
Aspen has also accompanied me at work. I am a CRMA/PSS and worked for a nursing home, respite care for adults and now at an assisted living facility. He will greet each resident and sit next to them rub up to them and just give them comfort. They love when I bring him to work with me. It's not official but he is a pet therapy dog.
He is so sweet and full of love.
Aspen never leaves my side when I am home. His job is to watch over me, I believe he is an Angel sent from heaven to protect me. At bedtime he waits for me and I say" let's go to bed" immediately he gets up and is in bed beside me. In 9 years I have been at home every night with him sleeping by my bedside. This past Fall I planned a trip with my friends for the weekend. On Friday night my husband could not get Aspen to go to bed no matter what he did. Aspen would not stop looking out the window for me to come home pacing back and forth. My husband gave up around mid-nite and went to bed, Aspen as well.
Aspen is also our Beagle retriever, retrieves our Beagle for us when she gets loose in our fields. If you don't know, Beagles are runner and very good hunters their nose takes them every where. We give the command " go get Evey "and he runs and wrestled her to the ground with his soft mouth and holds her around her neck until we leash her.
Another occasion, when I came home from work one day they had gotten loose from their pen and dog house. I don't know how long they were out running and hunting in our fields, we have 12 acres, but there was Aspen and along side him was Evey, whew......what a relief. Thank goodness she loves him and stays with him. He is the best babysitter ever.
Where I work there is a resident who spins for yarn. I brought her some of his fur to see if it was possible to spin and she said yes, I almost cried. We are collecting Aspen's fur for her to spin. I can knit a scarf of his fur and have a keepsake. Won't that be great.....
We don't know what we are going to do the day comes that he will be over the Bridge. It will be a heartache for all of us.

Muscie came to Safe Harbor from the deep south; after spending a short time here, Muscie found the perfect home in NY, and quickly went on to pass her Good Citizen Test at the ACC national specialty in MA and then earn her Therapy Dog certification. Now she can share her love and happy personality with many new friends at hospitals and nursing homes. Nice job, Kelly Case and family!
